The food industry within foodRegio Lübeck
It all began in the 12th century when Lübeck became a trading settlement. It became a magnet for companies, industries sprang up and an important infrastructure developed. Lübeck, along with Schleswig-Holstein as a whole, has become an attractive location for industry, service providers and institutions involved in the food industry.
Many big brand names are now located in and around Lübeck. The food-processing companies H. & J. Brüggen KG, Campbell's Germany, Hawesta Feinkost, J.G. Niederegger, Schwartauer Werke and Stadtbäckerei Junge are just some examples. And renowned service providers and suppliers such as food preservation expert G.C. Hahn and plant & equipment manufacturer Gerstenberg Schröder are also based in the foodRegio region.
There are 134 companies in food industry of the foodRegio region with around 6,000 employees paying compulsory social insurance contributions. That is equivalent to 7.6% of the entire working population of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck. Together these companies have an annual turnover of over 550 million euros and include processing companies, suppliers of raw materials (fisheries, vegetable growers, crop farmers etc.), consumables (e.g. packaging) and capital goods (e.g. plant and machinery) as well as specialized wholesalers. The biggest individual areas of activity, according to number of employees, are the manufacturing of bakery products and confectionery, the manufacturing of plant and machinery for the food industry, fish processing and grain milling.
